"Henry
Timberlake Story Emissaries of Peace: 1730-1760"
Currently in the works at Seruto & Company, this new touring exhibit for
the Museum of the Cherokee Indian was recently awarded a prestigious grant by
the NEH.
In the 1760s, an ambitious but naïve Lieutenant Henry Timberlake
volunteered to be an emissary and go to a Cherokee village where
he recorded his impressions and observations of Cherokee life.
After three months in Cherokee country, Timberlake escorted Ostenaco,
great Cherokee leader and orator, to the Court of St. James where
he met King George III.
He recorded his adventures in journals, which were ultimately published as
Henry Timberlake's Memoirs. These writings provide a unique look at 18th-century
Cherokee life.
